Winter prep updates. Solar, chickens, wood and more
The solar insulation is working pretty well. With a heated seed mat and a 70 watt lightbulb, we’re staying about 20 degrees above the outside temperatures. Under normal Oklahoma winter, that would be more than enough, but with this artic front, it’s not going to let me stay above freezing so I can charge the LiFEPO4 batteries without some added help.
Another must on the homestead is coffee! And we make ours in an old percolating coffee pot on the Blackstone side burner every morning. However, on extremely blustery days, the side burner has trouble staying lit. So, we decided to add some wind protection around the bottom half of the porch, mainly so we could make coffee every day. Priorities!
Ran through the chicken coop and run. Made sure water was all filled up as well as the feeders. Heat isn’t a thing for them as they are covered by down blankets, but food and water are a must!
And last but not least, wood! Fire is a must when the temps get to the single digits! In the winter, wood is a priority.
Don’t forget we’ll be at the Homestead Expo in Talala, OK on April 27. We’d love to see you there.
