Next step on our journey here is making room for the new porch.
Initially, we were were going to build a porch between the two buildings, and just build around the tree (making room for it to grow). But as we looked at the tree, we realized, while it’s still growing, it’s not doing that well. It’s even lost a few decent branches since we bought the place.
If we leave the tree and just build around it, what happens if we have to take it out in a few years? The only thing I could think of was a crane. And visions of dollar signs started dancing in my head.
So, we decided to go ahead and take it down now. The problem was with it’s proximity to the bed room building, the living room building and the shed (with all the solar batteries in it. MOST of the trees I’ve dropped have gone the way I’ve wanted them to go. But I even have a recording of one that didn’t, so I didn’t want to chance it. We figured it would be best if we just paid someone to do it. We got a recommendation and had her come out and take a look.
They came out and in short order, the old hickory tree was safely on the ground.
Next up for me is getting it all cleaned up.
Some of this wood I plan to keep for the smokers. Hickory is what I use the most of!
