Foraging, things I never thought I’d do…

“Foraging, things I never thought I’d do”, said my wife last week when we went out to do some foraging.

However, for the last few years, we’ve been trying to eat more naturally.
We’ve been trying to remove chemicals out of our diets.
One of those areas is medicine.

Now, do not get me wrong. Modern medicine is amazing, and I have no problem taking a medicine I need to take.
However, what’s in many of these medicines? Some of the ingredients are suspect. Also, it is not in the interests of companies that make this medicine to actually heal you. If you’re healed, you no longer need their medicine, and then where are they at?

As stated before, I believe in God and that He made this world. There are proven things all around us that are good for us. Food is medicine!
The better we eat, usually, the healthier we are.

So, we’re starting to look at plants that God created, and look into the health benefits they provide.

So, this week, we did some foraging of a couple easy to identify plants.

The first was Mullein.
“It’s also used for a variety of traditional herbal and medicinal purposes for coughs and other respiratory ailments.” – University of Michigan
So, we can take some leaves and dry them, and make a tea to help with coughs, or take a cough medicine made in a lab. I know I’m willing to give it a try.

We also foraged some sumac berries for steeping in some water to make a tea.

This is a brand new area of research for us. And we know next to nothing in this area, so by no means am I stating this is something you should be doing. However, it may be something you should research for yourself. I know personally, if I can find a plant that God made, as opposed to a pill that humans made, I’ll take the plant every time.
