Screen door latch

Screen door requires an improvement because of wind

We require an improvement to the screen door, and soon. Recent high winds has opened the door more than once, and it becomes annoying.

Problem

The high winds has managed to bust the screening out of it’s track as well, which required me to fix it a couple of times.
So I had taken the door off and put on some wood over the tracks to keep the screening in place and that did wonders.
It even firmed up the screen door, making it feel more substantial.

But the winds are bouncing the door.
Open and closing it innumerably,

While we put a locking latch on the inside of the door, we didn’t have one on the outside, and I didn’t really want one out there.
I didn’t want to see anyone get locked in. So I’ve been braining storming solutions, and my bride came up with one that we think will work wonders.

Solution

She explained to me what she wanted, and I was able to find it on Amazon.
It’s just a normal gate latch, but the latch is spring loaded. It comes with a coated wire that we can pull from the inside, and open the latch from the outside. We think this will do exactly what we want.
So I ordered one.

In the meantime, we had another windy night.
I had gone to bed early, so I was in bed listening to the screen door bounce.
I couldn’t lock it. If I did, she could not come to bed.
I ended up taking a hot pad, and shut it in the door. It put enough tension on the door it kept it from bouncing. My bride could still open the door from the outside.
She figured out the next day, she could hang it from the latch inside, and just let it hang there.
That worked a couple days till the latch arrived.

Now it’s time to install the latch.
It’s a simple install.
Add the hardware to the door and 4×4 with provided screws. I went ahead and predrilled to make life easier.
Once I did that (making sure it was level) I then drilled a hole through the 4×4 and ran the cable through it. Attached it to the latch and cut the excess away.

So far, so good.
Quick and easy install!
